I am embarrassed to tell you this story but feel a need to share to help anyone else in this predicament: I had a telemarketer (hacker) call and tell me he was calling from Microsoft, checking my protection and saw that my home computer was not protected. He explained the dangers that I would be subject to and asked why did I not keep up with a firewall and virus protection. I have been really good in catching these callers and hanging up but this guy got me. He gave me an American name (with a foreign accent ) and the company with a phone number, as well as his so called employee number. I told him no thanks and hung up. I thought about it and called the number he gave me to see who answers. He answered and I asked him more questions. He said that he would show me on my computer how many hackers have been trying to get in. THIS WAS A BIG BIG MISTAKE. He asked for my computer number and code (while having a dumb moment) I gave it to him. It seemed legitimate with all the things he was showing me and then CAME THE SURPRISE. He said he was working with Best Buy and could offer me a great deal for computer protection. All I had to do was fill out this info with my name, address, date of birth and Credit Card number. I told him absolutely NOT and hung up. In the mean time he really messed up my computer.
I called HALO Computing in Owego (607-972-3252) and was treated with the utmost respect.
They were extremely considerate, caring and put me at full ease since I was ready to crawl the walls and ask the governor to call a state emergency (lol).
They made my computer clean inside and safe again. Love this guy and his partner.
